Couple travelling Thailand grow veggies on their van's roof
A pensioner couple travelling around Thailand grow vegetables on the roof of their camper van.
Sunthorn Khamngam, 65, and his wife Fah, 63, drive around the Southeast Asian country in the worn-looking black vehicle with green foliage sticking out of its roof.
Footage shows the couple showing off the unusual van, with the words 'Midnight a Cocoa' and yellow stars graffitied on its side.
Instead of a roof rack, the van was crowned with a makeshift patio, with two leather seats, a surfboard sign, and a miniature garden on which the couple grew herbs and vegetables.
Sunthorn, an artist from northern Phayao province, said the old van had been sitting unused in his garage for decades so he decided to convert it into a mobile garden.
While driving around the country, vising beaches and forests, they use the vegetables for their lunch and donate some of the produce to the homeless.
He said he used hydroponic foam sheets to grow the plants as they were lighter compared to soil. Among the various shrubs, veggies, and herbs he cultivates are bitterleaf trees, jumbay, lemongrass, and small tamarinds.
He added that he often throws fruit seeds onto the van roof after eating, allowing them to grow on their own.
He said: 'I often drive around Bangkok and I also take my wife to other places to explore the country. When we're back in Phayao, many people at gas stations will take photos and tell us that our van is one-of-a-kind.'
Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil, where nutrient-rich water directly delivers essential minerals to the plant roots.
