A huge 7ft python that slithered into a family's home to escape floods was caught by rescue volunteers in Thailand.

The serpent had entered the house and was spotted by the terrified homeowners wedged under their gate following heavy rains in Samut Prakan province.

The residents called the local reptile handlers, who arrived to haul the snake away.

The rescuers said they had difficulty controlling the ferocious creature, but they eventually managed to pin it down and seal it inside a sack.

The python was later released into the wild away from the neighbourhood.

Prasert Puangkaeb, a volunteer of the the Ruamkatanyu Rescue Foundation, said: 'During the rainy season, the floods cause many reptiles, including venomous and non-venomous snakes, to emerge and hide in people's houses.

'If you found a snake, do not attempt to catch it on your own as it is too dangerous. Immediately notify the rescue personnel in your area as they are trained to handle such situations. '

The reticulated python is found throughout Southeast Asia, where they live in forests, swamps, canals and even in cities, causing them to come into conflict with humans. The species is one of the world's largest snakes and can eat humans, cats, dogs, birds, rats and other snakes.
