Black Friday in central London's shopping district got off to a slow start, with the biggest opening queue of the morning on Oxford Street still rather underwhelming.

John Lewis had the most punters waiting outside when it opened its doors, but even that was far fewer than have been seen outside shops in years gone by.

It is not clear whether the rise of online shopping, inflation, uninspiring offers, or sheer fluke is responsible for the slower than expected start to the well-known discount day.
