A group of Just Stop Oil (JSO) protesters were arrested after lying down in the middle of the road to block traffic outside parliament in London on Monday 27 November.

The direct action climate activists want to stop the UK government granting any new fossil fuel licenses, something the current government has committed to doing.

The group marched through wet and cold conditions from Trafalgar Square to nearby Parliament Square, where they obstructed traffic and six of them were promptly arrested.

Inspired by successful demonstrations in the Netherlands, where sustained road disruptions led to parliamentary action against fossil fuel subsidies, Just Stop Oil issued an open call to the public to march against what they term a "criminal government."

However, in the Netherlands recent general election a large percentage of the electorate voted for far-right parties that promised to undo such climate action.

Among those marching was Xandra Gilchrist, a 72-year-old retired social worker from Leamington Spa, who says she is driven by a sense of urgency to protect future generations from the climate crisis.

With 633 arrests since 30 October and nine JSO activists currently in prison, Just Stop Oil says it is essential to continue to resist the expansion of oil and gas, claiming it represents the will of the majority to secure humanity's survival.

The group says its daily marches from Trafalgar Square at noon represent a collective stand against the government's disregard for the environment and the rights of peaceful protestors.

It claims victory is inevitable in their fight against new oil and gas initiatives.

Opponents disagree, claiming their disruptive methods inconvenience ordinary people more than decision-makers and risk causing a backlash.
