A health engineer has revealed that you can earn yourself a whopping £180,000 by donating your own poo to help others.

The worldwide scheme encourages healthy individuals to donate their waste instead of flushing it away, to aid those with gastro issues.

But there is a catch- it's inserted into someone else after donation, proving that sharing really is caring.

Sarah Adekola, an engineer and content creator, shared the project with her 453,000 followers on Instagram (@millennialwealthsarah ), racking up over 118,000 views and leaving users in disbelief.

"It's a great way to support scientific research, help people with gut issues, and make money in the process," the 29-year-old told Needtoknow.co.uk.

“Your contribution can help researchers and healthcare professionals develop better treatments for a range of conditions.

"I heard about stool donations at work and researched it online.

"I found a number of institutions offering paid stool donation programs."

The donation scheme involves transferring stool from a healthy donor into the gastrointestinal tract of a recipient, and it's currently used to treat various gastro conditions including some forms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

There are six steps in the unusual process:

DONOR SELECTION

Volunteers are screened to rule out any medical issues and infectious diseases, making sure the sample is healthy.

She said: “Healthy individuals are carefully screened to ensure they have a diverse and healthy gut microbiome.

STOOL COLLECTION

If you pass the selection process, you must first provide a sample.

She said: "[It] is then processed to separate the solid and liquid components, leaving a concentrated stool suspension.

RECIPIENT PARTICIPATION

The individual receiving the donation must undergo preparations, such as clearing their gut of harmful bacteria using laxatives or antibiotics.

She said: “[They] typically suffer from conditions like recurrent Clostridium difficile infection or inflammatory bowel disease."

TRANSPLANT PROCEDURE

Next, it is time to insert the sample, and this can be done in different ways.

She said: “The donor stool suspension is typically delivered to the recipient through various methods, including colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, or through oral capsules.”

MICROBIOTA RESTORATION

The recipient's gut will slowly balance out after the donor sample is inserted.

She said: “This can help alleviate symptoms and resolve the underlying condition.”

FOLLOW-UP

Recipients are monitored closely in case of reactions to the transplant and to monitor the success of the procedure.

She said: "Additional treatments or repeat transplants may be necessary in some cases."

Not everyone can qualify for the treatment, as the requirements can be very strict.

There are also rigorous criteria that must be met for those applying, including an age limit of 18 to 60 years old.

These include good health, no gastrointestinal conditions, a healthy diet, no recent travel to high-risk areas, no antibiotics in the last three months and no chronic medications.

Those interested in the procedure can apply directly through their local hospital, and the incentives are very high.

You can rake in the money from the unusual scheme, with contributors in the US able to earn a whopping half a grand from just one sample.

She said: “It's a way to make a positive impact on the lives of those in need.

"[Money earned] varies drastically depending on the country where you are based.

"In the U.S., you can get $500 per stool sample.”

“There is a growing demand for stool donors and it has already been proven to have a 91% success rate in individuals with gut problems”

Sharing the post on Instagram, she gained over 830 likes as users didn't believe the scheme was real.

One user commented: “Where do I sell mine”

Shiniga wrote: “Well.. that’s a s****y way to make money.” [sic]

Another user added: I have a lot of – to give so might as well sell it.” [sic]

“Can you imagine living it up nicely and someone asks you oh what do you do for a living? Oh I sell my –," said Rizz. [sic]

Someone else commented: “Sounds strange, but people who have bowel disease (like myself) can benefit from these processes. Fecal transplants has saved people’s lives. If my poop was viable I’d do it.” [sic]

“Say whattt??? I need to sign up for this seriously, all this time, I’ve just been flushing away this good healthy poop. I know my poo is good and healthy. I definitely will be signing up for this," said one person. [sic]
