Coast Guard rescue passengers on distressed vessel in the Dominican Republic

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued passengers whose vessel sank about 30 miles north of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic on Wednesday.

Coast Guard District Seven watchstanders received a request from the Dominican Republic Navy after six people on a raft were rescued by a Carnival Cruise Line vessel on December 13.

The cruise line reported six additional crew members from the vessel Two Brothers were still missing.

The MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew arrived on scene and began conducting a search near the sunken vessel's last reported location and found all six mariners hanging on to debris of the sunken vessel.

The aircrew hoisted all six of the survivors onto the helicopter and transferred them to emergency medical services in Puerto Plata.

Lieutenant Commander Jeb Slick, the mission's co-pilot, said: 'The weather conditions were less than idea. Our crew's outstanding work ethic and dedication to training led to the successful rescue of these survivors.'

All 12 survivors were reported in good health.
