Australian emergency workers rescued stranded residents from floods today in the aftermath of the devastation caused by Cyclone Jasper in Queensland.

Footage shows the north-eastern Australian region severely flooded as a result of the heavy storm, with emergency workers going door-to-door in boats to evacuate stranded locals.

Waist-high floodwaters were threatening people's homes, with rescuers putting children into dinghies as the costs linked to the damage skyrocket.

A statement from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said: 'These are long days, late nights.

'SES volunteers and Fire and Rescue Service swiftwater technicians have been putting in hard yards in FNQ over the past few days, plucking more than 150 people (and a few four-legged-friends) from floodwater.

'Our crews will remain in the far north to assist locals as efforts move from rescue to clean up and recovery.'

Rescuers are also searching for an 85-year-old man, who has not been named but who is from the Far North Queensland town of Degarra, who has not been heard from or seen since Sunday, according to reports.

Queensland State Disaster Coordinator Deputy Commissioner Shane Chelepy told local media they are continuing their search despite difficult conditions.

He said: 'Our crews on the ground are working tirelessly to search through flood waters and on land to locate this man who remains unaccounted for.

'The conditions are difficult due to flooding and debris. However, search efforts will continue as waters begin to recede.

'We now have grave concerns for his welfare, and we urge anyone who knows anything which could assist us to please contact police immediately.'

The Australian Emergency Services Minister, Murray Watt, has said it that it is 'too early' to know the full scale of the damage caused by the category two storm.

He added: 'Some of the roads will take some time to repair – you will have seen some of the damage is enormous – but we obviously want to get the freight routes opened up as we can and work is already beginning on that.'
