STORYLINE:

A fire broke out in a local market in Lome, the capital of Togo, from Thursday night to Friday.

The fire department had rushed to the scene and evacuated people in high-risk areas, including a gas station and stores near the market.

According to witnesses at the scene, the fire started around 8.30 p.m. and quickly swept across the whole market. For at least five hours, market facilities were destroyed by the fire, whose flames could be seen for several kilometers.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Southern Togo is currently in the harmattan season that is characterized by dry winds and low humidity.
