This is the dramatic moment homes were swept away by severe floods in southern Thailand.

Footage shows the heartbreaking scene as residents watched their properties submerged and dragged away by the muddy torrents in Yala on December 25.

Interior Ministry spokesman Traisuree Taisaranakul said 24 districts across the provinces of Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani, Songkhla, and Satun have been worst affected by floods.

While satellite imagery showed that 142 square kilometres were now underwater following heavy rain since Friday.

Officials said that flooding has impacted 19,624 households across the region, which is close to the border with Malaysia.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and other ministers will visit Narathiwat province - the worst affected - to asses the damage.

Southern Thailand is reaching the climax of its annual monsoon rainy season.
