This is the shocking moment fireworks exploded around a woman as she welcomed the New Year with her boyfriend.

The couple was enjoying their barbecue on a mountain campsite when the pyrotechnics from below blasted around them in Phetchabun Province, Thailand on December 31.

Footage shows the colourful yet terrifying fireworks setting off, interrupting the holidaymakers' supposedly peaceful night in the mountains.

Girlfriend Thidaporn Inprasit said the incident happened twice on their two-night stay on the property.

She said: ‘Some of the sparks landed on my boyfriend's hat and ignited his hair. The fireworks came from another camping area below and the staff refused to do something to control the situation.'

She added the incident already happened on the first night of their stay on December 30 and worsened on New Year's Eve with more people wanting to light up fireworks for the festivities.

She said: ‘Their large fireworks shot towards us. We didn't know what to do. We just stayed under a blanket to keep safe.'

Thidaporn said their vacation turned into a horrifying experience becaus eof lack of safety measures.

She said: ‘It's a simple gesture of ensuring the safety of others. Fireworks should be prohibited in national parks and the staff should have clear rules about it.'
