On Wednesday, January 3, 2024, the crew of a 10-meter fishing vessel sought assistance from Scarborough RNLI lifeboat due to concerns about safely returning to the harbour. Responding to a crew pager alert, the all-weather lifeboat RNLB Fredrick William Plaxton was launched at 11:55 am.

Facing rough sea conditions with 3 to 5 meters of swell, the lifeboat reached the distressed vessel promptly. Attempting to guide the fishing vessel back to the harbour, it was struck by large waves, necessitating a change of course away from the harbour to safer waters.

The decision was made to wait for the incoming tide later in the day for another attempt. At 2:53 pm, with improved conditions, the lifeboat was tasked again, successfully assisting the fishing vessel's return to the harbour. Despite a subsequent page at 7:36 pm, no further assistance was needed.

Scarborough RNLI's coxswain emphasized the importance of preparedness, urging those planning sea activities to check weather forecasts, wear life jackets, inform someone of their plans, and carry communication devices. The coxswain commended the skipper's decision, highlighting the significance of knowing the vessel's limits for a safe maritime experience.
