Two workers travelling from Severn Trent to Northumberland rescued a sheep after spotting the distressed animal stuck upside in a field on January 6.

Sam Porter and his friend who work for a water company were on their way to repair a water main on a farm when they saw the sheep on its back.

Porter's friend immediately leapt over the field's fence and gently helped the struggling sheep back to its feet.

The filmer told Newsflare: "We were driving down a road and I noticed a sheep on its back around 8 am (we had been on the road since 5 am).

"I shouted there was a sheep on its back so we stopped and went back up the road to take a look and it obviously couldn't get back on its feet.

"My friend instantly jumped out and went to save the life of the sheep as if they are on their back for five plus hours it can kill them.

"This can also mean they might be pregnant so they can't get up which would kill them all. After the sheep got up it seemed so happy."

Instagram users were quick to praise the duo's actions with one saying: "Yes what a hero. I raise sheep and this is very dangerous, even life-threatening if left that way. I am so glad the man recognised what was happening and ran to the sheep’s aid."

Another commented: "Can always tell the measure of a man by how he treats animals, saved this wee guy's life."
