STORYLINE:

Cambodia had exported 656,323 tonnes of milled rice in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 3 percent, the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF) said in a news release last Friday.

The Southeast Asian country earned a total revenue of 466 million U.S. dollars from the export of the commodity, up 13 percent year-on-year, the news release said, adding that the kingdom's rice had been shipped to 61 countries and regions.

China remained the top buyer of the commodity.

The kingdom exported 212,756 tonnes of milled rice to China last year, making a gross revenue of 138 U.S. million dollars, the news release said.

SOUNDBITE (English): MAK CHAMROEUN, Chairman of e-commerce platform AgriBee (Cambodia)
"China is a huge market for Cambodia's milled rice. China's purchase of milled rice from Cambodia is helping a lot to uplift Cambodian farmers out of poverty.
For me, I observe that Cambodian rice now has gained a lot more popularity in the Chinese market thanks to the good quality and good taste of Cambodian rice. And I believe that the Cambodian rice exported to the Chinese market will be increased more from this year and (in the) upcoming years.
I think that the Regional Comprehensive (Economic) Partnership (RCEP) agreement and the Cambodia-China Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA) have given a boost to Cambodia's export of rice to China and to other RCEP member countries."
