A man has documented his stay at what he claims is one of the “worst-rated” hotels in the UK, with a mission to give the establishment a chance to “redeem itself”.

The Assheton Arms Hotel in Manchester has just 1.7 stars on Google and 1.5 stars on TripAdvisor.

It’s been described online as “disgusting” and a “nightmare”, with one former guest claiming their family disliked the establishment so much that they reportedly left after just 15 minutes.

Reading the slew of bad reviews and eager to try the venue out for himself, George Redfern, from Wirral, UK, recently booked a one-night stay at £30.

He shared a video of his stay in a now-viral TikTok, jokingly finding perks to the stay – such as the broken TV leading to reduced screen time, and getting “entertainment” from a broken radiator.

The manufacturing administrator told NeedToKnow.co.uk that he was ultimately surprised he lasted the night in the “terrible” hotel.

He claims to have entered his room to find strange “marks” on the walls and a previous guest’s leftover kebab on a seat.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old couldn’t bring himself to use the shared bathroom, which was allegedly covered in mould and hair.

“I thought this [the price per night] was good value for money as it was a Friday night – you will struggle to find a hotel under £50 anywhere in the UK on a weekend,” George explained.

“I wanted to see if the reviews on the hotel are justified and give the hotel a chance to redeem themselves from all the bad reviews they have been getting.

“I now understand why one commenter said it was the worst night of his life.

“The hotel smelt strongly of dampness and cigarettes.

“The floor in my room was sticky, the table was dirty, my chair had leftover doner kebab on it, and the chair was stained with all sorts.

“The walls had marks and god knows what on them, the wardrobe was filthy, the TV was smashed and the radiator was rusty, as seen in my video.

“It was only the bed which was clean!

“I slept the whole night but I woke up with a cold and was unable to get a shower in the morning as the shared bathroom looked horrendous.

“The best thing about the hotel I would say was that the bed was clean – if the bed wasn’t, I don’t think I could have slept there.

“I used a UV to look for any stains and I couldn’t find anything, which is a positive.

“The worst thing about the hotel was the windows.

“My window was fully shut but you could hear all the cars and feel the breeze outside.

“I had to put layers on to keep warm.

“I didn’t complain about the receptionist speaking little to no English as I felt like it would have caused more problems for me.

“I have not asked for a refund either as I did stay the night, but I have seen many reviews of the hotel refusing to give them out.

“I think the overall terrible score is fair and I am surprised how this hotel is still open with that many bad reviews.”

The 21-year-old also took to TikTok, where he jokingly captioned his video: “Would you stay at this hotel? I stayed at one of the WORST rated hotels in the UK and gave a good review!”

However, he later explains that the review – which garnered 870,000 views – wasn’t actually all that good.

Social media users have been left stunned.

“My brother stayed here, said it was the worst night of his life,” said user Christina.

“There’s a kebab shop round the corner that won runner up for the best kebabs in the UK. Another reason to visit Middleton,” said Moe.

“As a Middleton resident and Google worker I salute your gamification of our system sir,” joked someone else.

Despite the terrible feedback online, the hotel maintains a two-star status on Hotels.com.

Jam Press contacted the Assheton Arms Hotel for comment, who said: "We watched the video and it has a positive vibe.

“This is new management who is trying to build the positive reviews of our hotel.

“We hope to build our reviews to nearly 10 stars.”
