STORYLINE:

The village of Konabeng in central Cameroon was abuzz with excitement on Monday, when the Cameroonian national team played its first match of the Africa Cup of Nations of this year.

Residents of the village and from neighboring villages gathered to cheer on the Indomitable Lions (Cameroonian national football team).

Thanks to the RuralStar and RuralSolar projects built by China's Huawei in Cameroon since 2016, hundreds of rural villages like Konabeng have been connected to electricity and Internet, and to broadcast services provided by a Chinese digital TV operator.

SOUNDBITE 1 (French): ETOUNDI QUINTIN, Chief of Konabeng village, Cameroon
"I'm very happy with my solar power there. Without this project and others that have been implemented, we wouldn't have seen anything like this. You see, I went and wore the suit myself (of Indomitable Lions), which means I'm happy."

SOUNDBITE 2 (French): HUBERT ETOUNDI, Villager from a neighboring village near Konabeng, Cameroon
"I'm from the neighboring village (Mbadibam, 2 km from Konabeng). I've come to watch the match in Konabeng. I'm satisfied. Despite the score, I'm satisfied."

SOUNDBITE 3 (French): HUBERT ATANGANA, Villager of Konabeng, Cameroon
"I'm very happy. Solar energy keeps us well. We've never had a blackout. We're very happy. I'm very happy. We're not cut off from the power supply, and this is the Indomitable Lions match we're watching. If it weren't for solar power, we wouldn't be able to see it, so I'm happy with Huawei."
