STORYLINE:

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Tuesday that its troops have surrounded the main southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis after its 24 soldiers were killed in Gaza in the worst single-day toll on Monday.

At a press briefing, IDF Spokesman Daniel Hagari said 21 soldiers were killed in an explosion in central Gaza on Monday. They were preparing explosives to demolish two buildings when coming under a rocket-propelled grenade attack by the Palestinian militants, which triggered a premature explosion and resulted in the collapse of the buildings, with the soldiers either inside or nearby.

"Here I'm in Tel Aviv standing in front of the Israeli Defense Ministry. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced Tuesday morning that 21 soldiers were killed in an incident in central Gaza Strip on Monday. The soldiers, all reservists, were killed when two buildings collapsed following a large blast and Hamas operatives fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a tank. Following this largest single-day death toll of Israeli soldiers since ground offensive began in Gaza, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country 'will not stop fighting until absolute victory.' Also on Tuesday, the Israeli army said that overnight it completed the encirclement of southern Gaza's Khan Younis, killing dozens of Hamas militants in the process."
