Farmers in Binh Duong, Vietnam, are using lasers to engrave detailed artwork into watermelons ahead of the Chinese New Year.

According to the farmers, they're able to charge more for the watermelons that have been engraved using laser technology which takes up to 40 minutes per fruit.

They claim to sell between 4,000 to 6,000 watermelons a day during the run-up to the Chinese New Year. The normal watermelons are sold for up to $2 USD and the engraved ones are priced up to $10.

According to farmers, during the Lunar New Year to increase the number of watermelons sold, they used laser engraving technology to engrave patterns on the surface of the watermelons for customers to decorate during the Lunar New Year. Normal watermelons only cost 1-2 USD. After being engraved with patterns, it will be sold for 8-10 USD. Every day farmers can sell 4000-6000 carved watermelons.

Using laser engraving technology helps farmers save time instead to manual engraving, which takes about 40 minutes for one watermelon. Now with laser engraving technology it only takes about 1 minute to complete a watermelon.
