Locals offered incense and food at shrines ahead of the Chinese New Year in northern Thailand.

Families left trays of 'lucky' round fruit and meat dishes to invite good luck for the coming lunar new year at the Pung Tao Kong Shrine in Chiang Mai province on February 8.

Some residents opted to pay their respects at the shrine a night earlier to avoid congestion. They said most of their prayers involved asking for good health, a thriving career, and a better economy for Thailand.

Chinese New Year in 2024 falls on Saturday, February 10. The celebrations culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 24.

The event is celebrated widely across Thailand, where immigrants from China developed the country when the mighty Khmer Empire moved further south in the 15th century.
