STORYLINE

The dragon dance has a history of thousands of years in Tongliang, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.

With the advent of the Chinese Lunar New Year or the Year of the Dragon, Alex Middleton, a British expat who has lived in Chongqing for 13 years, recently visited Tongliang to discover the culture behind the dragon dance.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): ALEX MIDDLETON, British expat
"Hey guys, I'm Alex Middleton. As it is the year of the dragon, we're in Tongliang, the home of Chinese dragon dance, (we) wanna watch one of the world's top dragon dance festival."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): ALEX MIDDLETON, British expat
"What are you guys doing right now? Are you preparing for tonight's dragon dance show?"

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): Performer of dragon dance in Tongliang
"Yes, we are preparing for tonight's show, such as fastening the rope on the dragon and installing the light decorations."

In May 2006, the Tongliang Dragon Dance was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage.

SOUNDBITE 4 (Chinese): LI JING, Captain of Tongliang dragon dance team
"We want to introduce the traditional culture to more international friends, especially the Tongliang Dragon Dance Festival."

Different from regular dragon dances, the fire dragon is the most heart-shaking part of the Tongliang Dragon Dance. The "fires" or "sparks" are molten iron at about 1,500 degrees Celsius.

SOUNDBITE 5 (English): ALEX MIDDLETON, British expat
"Amazing yeah, I mean I knew the fireworks, the metal works they're quite amazing. But the story itself was absolutely, really quite stunning."
