This is the dramatic moment an out-of-control pickup truck crashed into a shop in Thailand.

The green Isuzu had been trying to overtake another truck, but lost control and smashed into an appliance store in Nakhon Sawan province on February 5 evening.

CCTV footage shows the vehicle smashing through the gates of the shop, hitting a hapless pet dog named Heng Heng that was sleeping.

The shop owners - a Thai couple - were unharmed, but Heng Heng was taken to a veterinarian for wounds on its mouth and right leg.

The unnamed driver claimed he had tried to overtake the truck as he was rushing his sick father to the Tafka Hospital. However, the truck reportedly shifted into his lane, forcing him to swerve to avoid it.

The owners said they felt sorry for the driver and will not file charges against him. They said they will only ask him for compensation to repair the shop.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
