A bus went up in flames earlier today - with the fire so big smoke could be seen from 'half a mile away'.

Firefighters raced to the single-decker vehicle on the A35 in Axminster, Devon at around 9am.

The road was shut while crews worked - with video showing black smoke billowing into the sky.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said later that the bus had been "completely destroyed"."

The cause is currently unknown.

An onlooker said: "We saw the smoke through the trees and when we came round the corner we saw the bus completely engulfed in the flames."

"It was a really really big fire, so we couldn't even tell if it was a bus or a lorry. After about three or four minutes there was nothing left."

"A couple of other vehicles had been stopped and everyone had been got out of the bus unhurt thankfully."

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service told DevonLive: "We were called at 8.35am this morning to a single decker bus that was well alight on the A35 near Taunton Cross, Devon."

"Appliances from Colyton and Honiton stations attended and used breathing apparatus, a hose reel jet and thermal imaging cameras to extinguish the fire."

"The vehicle has been completely destroyed by fire."
