A pet owner in Memphis, Tennessee, was shocked to discover he cat can understand French.

Kaley Browning had recently started to learn French so she decided to speak a few words to her cat Bartholomeow.

To her surprise, the feline immediately stopped what he was doing when his owner spoke French.

Browning told Newsflare: "Tell me my cat isn’t French. Every time I speak French to my cat, he looks at me. Bartholomeow is such a sweet cat. I like to think he was a French pastry chef in another life.

"I woke up one morning and was talking to my cat and I decided to start recording a video of him and then I began speaking to him in french and he seemed so surprised by it. I loved it.

"I recently began learning French months ago so I could communicate with a French guy because he doesn’t speak English and just decided one morning to speak French to Bartholomeow."
