As the Tibetan New Year coincided with the Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, on Feb. 10 this year, a family living in a multicultural compound in Lhasa, the capital of southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, celebrated the two festivals together.

The compound named Ngangpa Kangchung, a Tibetan-style residence in downtown Lhasa, is home to some 70 residents from Han, Tibetan, Hui and other ethnic groups.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): SUN JIANXUE, Resident in Ngangpa Kangchung compound in Lhasa
"I came to Lhasa in Xizang in 1979 as a road construction worker on the National Highway 318. I am 62 years old and my hometown is in Lanzhou, NW China's Gansu Province."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Tibetan): SONAM BADRAN, Sun Jianxue's wife
"I have been married for 32 years and my husband is of Han ethnic group."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Tibetan): SONAM BADRAN, Sun Jianxue's wife
"Our family has been living in this compound for over a decade. Residents are from Han, Tibetan, Hui and other ethnic groups. We usually help each other when residents are in trouble."

After years of living in Lhasa, Sun likes to extend new year greetings to his friends in Gansu in Tibetan language.

SOUNDBITE 4 (Chinese): SUN JIANXUE, Resident in Ngangpa Kangchung compound in Lhasa
"The Tibetan New Year coincided with the Lunar New Year this year. I think Tibetans and Han people are a big family, so I follow local customs. We also made and had dumplings on Lunar New Year (in Lhasa). We're all friends and just like a family."

SOUNDBITE 5 (Chinese): SUN XIAOJUN, Sun Jianxue's son
"My Tibetan name is Tenphel Wangtso. I can speak both Mandarin and Tibetan now. I hope that my kid can master Tibetan and Mandarin. It's good for national unity."
