STORYLINE:

A reflection on the world order was under the spotlight at the 60th Munich Security Conference which kicked off on Friday.

The "2024 Munich Security Report" released recently shed light on "obvious flaws" of the existing international order.

Scholars and experts from China attending the conference proposed the establishment of a fair and reasonable international order, suggesting that old mindset should be modified and full respect should be paid, especially to the appeals of developing countries.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): CUI HONGJIAN, Professor of the Academy of Regional and Global Governance at Beijing Foreign Studies University, Vice president of the Chinese Association for European Studies
"I believe that the West should genuinely return to a focus on development and cooperation as the leading approach. In doing so, many root causes of security issues, crises, and conflicts can be addressed."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): SUN CHENGHAO, Fellow at the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS), Tsinghua University
"We also aspire to make new contributions to the international order through various means. For instance, the series of initiatives we have proposed, including the Belt and Road Initiative, are all aimed at addressing the gaps in the existing international mechanisms. This includes addressing the practical needs of developing countries."
SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): WANG HUIYAO, President of Center for China and Globalization (CCG)
"How to actively respond to global governance is a question that requires collaboration with Europe, the United States, and the Global South. Therefore, I believe that today's report remains highly valuable and meaningful."

Inaugurated in 1963, the MSC is an international platform for high-level discussions on global security issues and a venue for diplomatic initiatives to address security concerns.
