Tourists are concerned after spotting orangutans "eating rubbish and leftovers" at a zoo in Indonesia.

According to a visitor at Medan Zoo, a male Borneo orangutan named Simba was seen looking "weak and hungry".

Lamhot Siahaan who visited the zoo on February 19 said he was "very concerned" at the condition of the primate and also claimed no food was seen and the orangutans were eating rubbish or leftovers.

According to local reports, the same zoo saw the deaths of three Sumatran tigers and another four are critically ill.

The Jakarta Post reported the tigers were severely ill as a result of institutional mismanagement and a funding crisis, prompting the central government to intervene in the zoo’s operations to help care for the animals.
