An abandoned newborn baby was found alive and under a bridge in the Philippines.

The baby girl was discovered by residents who heard her crying in Occidental Mindoro province on February 29.

Neighbours gathered to help the infant, who still had her umbilical cord attached, and took her to a nearby house. They wiped away the dirt from her body and wrapped her in a shawl.

Footage shows the kind mothers helping to dress the baby they had rescued. They put her in bed while waiting for local authorities who took her to a hospital to be given a health check.

The baby girl weighed 2.5kg (5.5lbs) according to medics and was generally healthy. Meanwhile, police were still trying to search for her identity.

San Jose Municipal Social Welfare Office head Alice Cajayon said: ‘A woman found the baby naked and with umbilical cord. She called her neighbours to help the baby.

'The neighbours do not know of any young women in the area who were pregnant recently, so they think it could be someone from another village who left the baby.

'Thankfully the girl was not harmed and she will make a recovery. She is healthy now.'

The baby is now staying at the district hospital while police search for her mother. If officers cannot find the family, the girl will be taken into care.
