The European Commission (EC) on Monday announced a €1.84 billion fine on tech giant Apple for imposing restrictions on competitors of its streaming music service, such as Spotify, from the App Store that effectively prevented them from informing iPhone and iPad users about cheaper music subscription options outside the app.

"For a decade, Apple has abused its dominant market position in the distribution of music streaming services through the App Store. It is illegal and has impacted millions of European consumers who have not been able to choose freely," explained the European Commission's executive vice-president in charge of competition, Margrethe Vestager.
Brussels, which considers the fine "proportionate to Apple's global revenues" (0.5% of its annual turnover) and "necessary to ensure that it acts as a deterrent", has ordered Tim Cook's company to remove the restrictions on its competitors and to refrain from adopting similar practices in the future.
