The Indian government announced on Monday the implementation of the citizenship law passed by Parliament in 2019, which has been questioned by human rights organisations that consider it discriminatory against the Muslim population, as it favours the procedures for those who profess other religions such as Christians, Hindus or Buddhists. The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs has informed on social networks that from Monday applications for nationality can begin to be submitted. With this law, the government of Narendra Modi aims to favour those who came to India from Afghanistan, Bangladesh or Pakistan before 2015. The authorities have denied that the law implies a setback for the Muslim community and that, in fact, the overall objective is to protect groups that may have suffered discrimination. In this sense, it has always maintained that no one's nationality will be withdrawn. However, the 2019 debate has already led to strong mobilisations with more than twenty deaths in different areas, especially in the northeast.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, one of the most critical voices, announced on Monday that she will not implement any measure that "discriminates", according to NDTV. Modi has been pushing Indian nationalism since he came to power ten years ago and his party is the favourite for this year's general elections, considered the biggest in a democratic country.
