Endometriosis is a condition characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue in other places, such as ovaries, and fallopian tubes.
This condition is a common, poorly understood, and extremely debilitating, benign gynecologic problem.
Approximately 30 to 40% of women with endometriosis will be sub-fertile.
About 1/3 of women with endometriosis remain asymptomatic.
Some of the most common symptoms include, dysmenorrhea, or painful menstruation.
Heavy, or irregular menstrual bleeding.
Lower abdominal and pelvic pain.
Pain during intercourse, also known as dyspareunia.
Pain when passing stools, often associated with cycles of diarrhea and Constipation.
Nausea and vomiting.
Pain during urination.
And pain during exercise.
The exact cause of endometriosis is not fully understood.
However, several risk factors are associated with this condition.
Some of them include the following.
Family history of endometriosis.
Early age at menarche, or the first menstrual period.
Short menstrual cycles, typically less than 27 days.
Longer duration of menstrual flow, typically longer than seven days.
Heavy bleeding during menstruation.
Delayed childbearing age.
Anatomical defects of the uterus or fallopian tubes.
In addition, hypoxia and iron deficiency may also contribute to the early onset of endometriosis.
