Aerial footage shows the construction of a footbridge in South Lanarkshire, Scotland.

The massive 75-tonne footbridge and lift tower were aimed at improving accessibility and enhancing the passenger experience at the Uddingston Station.

Network Rail engineers embarked on a meticulous overnight operation on Saturday, March 23, to install the robust steel structures at the station. The station serves passengers traversing the bustling West Coast Main Line, one of Europe's busiest rail routes.

The installation of the footbridge and lift towers represents a significant milestone in the Access for All (AfA) scheme, a nationwide initiative dedicated to facilitating easier access for individuals with impaired mobility and those travelling with luggage, children, or bicycles.

These essential infrastructure upgrades underscore Network Rail's commitment to inclusivity and ensuring that all passengers can navigate the station environment comfortably and independently.

Susan Menmuir, Scheme Project Manager for Network Rail, expressed pride in the successful delivery of the project, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders involved in the endeavour.

She commended the coordination between Network Rail, principal contractor STORY, ScotRail, South Lanarkshire Council, and British Transport Police, which ensured the safe and timely completion of the installation process.

While the footbridge and lifts are scheduled to be opened to the public shortly after the old footbridge is removed in June, work continues to ensure the seamless integration of these essential facilities within the station infrastructure.

Councillor Kenny McCreary, representing Uddingston and Bothwell, praised Network Rail and its partners for their exemplary communication and commitment to community engagement throughout the project.

The community's appreciation for the project's progress was echoed by Michael Hart, on behalf of Uddingston Community Council, who commended Network Rail for reaching this significant milestone and anticipated further collaboration with Grow Uddingston to maintain the station's aesthetic appeal.

The installation process, facilitated by a 230-tonne crane and a 60-tonne crane, saw the successful positioning of the 75-tonne superstructure, with the largest component, the bridge deck, weighing approximately 15 tonnes.

Despite the logistical challenges, engineers executed the operation with precision and efficiency, ensuring minimal disruption to passenger services.
