STORYLINE:

With high quality, innovative designs and competitive prices, China's electric vehicle (EV) brands gained much attention at the 45th Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS).

The 12-day show opened to the public on March 27 and brought about 49 major auto brands to customers, with at least 20 new models launched at the motor show.

MG motor, owned by SAIC Motor, entered the Thai market in 2019 and saw its first locally produced EV roll off the production line in the Southeast Asian country last November.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): XU YIN, President of MG Sales (Thailand)
"We have launched a full range of products (in the Thai market), including gasoline vehicles and hybrid vehicles."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Thai): KRIENYOT, Thai customer
"Coming here today is an eye-opener. There are many Chinese brands. My son also came today for a Chinese electric vehicle. He likes it very much. After the test drive, we'll decide which one to buy."

Thailand has long been a major automobile production base in Southeast Asia due to its industrial chain and geographical advantages.

SOUNDBITE 3 (Thai): SUROJ SANGSNIT, Vice president for Industry and Business Development of EV Association of Thailand
"China's EV makers play a key role against the backdrop of making Thailand a major EV hub in ASEAN."

According to data released by the Thai Land Transport Department, more than 80 percent of newly registered battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Thailand last year were Chinese brands.
