Glamorous Thai ladyboys celebrate as they dodge annual military draft
Thailand's glamorous ladyboys celebrated as they dodged the country's annual military draft.
Transgender woman Worawut Phanvong, 21, arrived at her designated enlistment centre to process her mandatory conscription in Nakhon Nayok province on April 2.
Despite the sweltering 40-degree-Celsius heat, she turned up wearing a fashionable red dress, manicured nails, kitten heels and light makeup - a delicate flower amidst the crowd of sweaty villagers awaiting the annual conscription lottery.
In Thailand, healthy men aged 21 and older are required to serve in the military. Some of them volunteer, while others are forced into service through a lottery usually held in early April.
However, transgender women like Gotty who have undergone breast augmentation surgery are exempted from the draft.
Speaking in the video, Worawut said: 'The venue was comfortable because it was air-conditioned. All of the soldiers were very helpful and friendly too.
'I was placed in category 3 and was exempted from the draft because I underwent breast augmentation. I also don't need to come back next year, which I'm quite happy about.
'The recruitment officer told me to dress up on the day of enlistment to help promote our province, but I did not expect to get this much attention. I'm grateful that people praised my appearance.'
Military conscription has been compulsory in Thailand since 1905.
This year, some 40,000 positions in the army will be filled through conscription, Defence Ministry spokesman Rear Admiral Thanitpong Sirisawetsak said.
The enlistment started on April 1 and will last until April 12. However, men who 'transition' and live as women can be exempt from military service if they furnish medical records showing they have been diagnosed by a psychiatrist as having gender issues.
