This is the tragic moment a software engineer was killed when he fell into an uncovered drain.

Sheikh Akmal Sufiyan, 24, was carrying groceries through the hostel apartment block when he plunged into the pit in the Gachibowli district of Hyderabad, India, on April 21.

CCTV captured the harrowing accident at the Shanmukh Men's PG Hostel in Anjaiah Nagar close to the Kakatiya Hospital.

The man, who worked at a nearby tech company, is understood to have hit his chin on the edge of the shaft before falling into the sump drainage hole below.

Tragically, the resident seen in the video looking into the hole, who lived on the ground floor, continued with his work when he could not see anybody in the sump. However, the manager checked the surveillance footage shortly after and realised Sheikh had fallen into the abyss.

Police recovered Sheikh's body later that evening and he was already dead. Officers have now started proceedings against Mahender Reddy, the owner of the accommodation, alleging that his negligence in leaving the sump uncovered had led to the tragic incident.

They are waiting for the results of a post-mortem examination for the cause of death.
