Thabo Mbeki, former South African president and the former president of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party, is campaigning for the ANC ahead of the May 29 elections. 

Mbeki endorsed the ANC while campaigning in Soweto, which is considered the ANC's stronghold, on Thursday.

"I know there are many problems in the country, even problems within the ANC. And so as we say, vote ANC, we are making a commitment to the people that we will attend to the problems within the ANC itself, to make sure that it is able to discharge its responsibilities to the population."

"I was here, gathering, to hear the message of Mr. Thabo Mbeki, the former president that gives us the hope, gives us the hope that the next election they want to do better as they promise. The cost of living is too high, the (price of) petrol is high, so if they stick to their promises, trust me, we're going to win this struggle."

South Africa will hold the national and local government elections on May 29.
