A drunk British tourist who was caught on camera attacking a taxi driver has been arrested - and is facing up to a month in a hellhole Thai prison after refusing to apologise.

Luke Alexander Graham, 31, from Bury, Greater Manchester, erupted during a fare dispute with driver Abdullah Saesaheh, 25, in Phuket, southern Thailand, on April 27.

The barman claims he handed over 1,000 Baht (21.51 GBP) for the journey, which cost 400 Baht (8.60 GBP) and was demanding his change.

But the driver claims the holidaymaker was confused by the numbers on the notes and gave him 100 Baht (2.15 GBP), so he demanded the full amount.

Luke was recorded on the vehicle's dashcam strangling Abdullah while repeatedly saying: 'Give me my f****** money'.

However, Luke insisted: 'No I f****** didn't. I know on my mum's life I f****** didn't. Give me my money. Show me what I paid you with.'

When Abdullah refused, Luke then slapped him across the face.

As he leaned on the driver's seat door, he said: 'You're lucky you've got a little slap. You're a f****** f***y.

Police launched a manhunt for Luke and he was arrested at a hotel on the island of Koh Phi Phi in neighbouring Krabi province on April 30.

He spent a night in the cells before being interviewed today.

A police translator is seen in the video encouraging Luke to apologise, which would make for a lighter punishment, along with a payment of compensation to the alleged victim.

However, Luke was adamant that the cabbie had 'stolen his money'.

He said: 'With everyone, I've been as polite as I can be, that whole thing was, literally he stole my money from me and he wasn't giving it back, but he shouldn't steal again, he shouldn't. I shouldn't have acted the way that I did.'

In the police van outside, Luke added: 'My reaction? He shouldn't steal, he shouldn't steal money.'

Police said that Luke will appear in court later today. He is charged with 'harming others without causing physical or mental injuries'.

Under section 391 of Thai law, he is 'liable to imprisonment for not more than one month, or a fine not exceeding one thousand baht or both'.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Ekkasak Kwanwan from the Karon district police station in Phuket said that Luke had confessed to attacking the taxi driver.

The officer said: 'Luke Alexander Graham admitted that he is the person in the video and that he was responsible for the attack.

'An arrest warrant was issued for hurting another person and he was caught in Koh Phi Phi islands.

'The investigating officer has gathered all of the evidence from the tourist and from the taxi driver. He is now waiting to appear at the Phuket Provincial Court.

Shaken taxi driver Abdullah, who is seen in the video with his father Mohammed Bang Hae, thanked police for arresting the suspect quickly.

He said: 'The incident happened when I took the foreigner from Patong to Karon for 400 Baht.

'When we reached the hotel, the foreigner paid 100 Baht and was waiting to take the change and he said he had given 1,000 Baht banknote.

'But he had actually only gave me a 100 Baht note. The foreigner had a beer bottle with him so I thought he was drunk. He had two friends with him, who were also drinking beer and also drunk.'
