This is the heartwarming moment the youngest Humboldt penguin at the Oregon Zoo took her first dips into the water.

The creature named Opalo was born in late March but has spent the previous six weeks nestled in her cosy box, growing her feathers and preparing for her inaugural swim.

Zookeeper Travis Koons said Opalo 'couldn't wait to get in the water'.

Opalo's arrival is the first Humboldt chick to hatch at the Oregon Zoo since 2020, marking the 194th successful breeding of this threatened species since the zoo's conservation efforts began in the 1980s.

Her youthful gray plumage sets her apart, lacking the iconic tuxedo-like markings of adult Humboldt penguins.
