This video shows two species of cichlids from Palizada's river in Campeche, Mexico. It recorded an amazing protective behavior from this fishes to their nests.
Thorichthys meeki: It's common name is firemouth cichlid and it distributes in Central America Atlantic slope, in the Usumacinta River drainage, the Belize River drainage, and near Progreso, in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. Prefers lower and middle sections of rivers in slow moving waters. Lives in mud-bottomed and sand-bottomed canals and rocky ponds. Stays close to the shoreline vegetation for protection. Omnivorous, but feeds mainly on algae.
Amphilophus robertsoni: It's common name is Emerald cichlid and it distributes in Central America Atlantic slope from Mexico (Coatzacoalcos River) to Honduras. Found in rivers and lakes. Inhabits lower and middle sections of rivers in slower moving waters. Prefers a soft substrate of sand, mud and small stones. Generally spawns in open pits or depressions in the sand. Cleans an area about 12-18 inches in diameter and patrols an area about 1-2 cubic meters, diligently warding off intruders.
