Two elephants were rescued from decades of working in tourist and logging camps by Phuket Elephant Sanctuary, Phuket's first and only sanctuary.

Madee (60) and Kannika (32) have been working all their lives, and have finally been given freedom at PES. Wildlife photographer Peter Yuen covered the journey to their new lives, watching the chains being removed as they spent their first day of freedom swimming in a lake at the sanctuary. They had not been in water for over 20 years. They are now roaming freely around the forested land of the sanctuary, which will open in October 2016.
