Koalas among species prioritised by Australia's new 10-year environment plan
Koalas are among the species prioritised by Australia in its new 10-year plan aiming to protect a third of the continent's land mass. With this project, the country intends to end its status as "the mammal extinction capital of the world".
The zero extinction target constitutes a landmark moment as this is the first time a federal government has announced such profound measures.
The Australian government will focus on improving the lives of 110 species and 20 places. It will also protect 50m hectares of land and sea area by 2027.
The plan has identified natural disasters, habitat loss, climate change, and invasive pests as the main threats to native animals.
This footage shows a koala drinking from a bottle of water as a heatwave hits the country.
