Police block road because a tree might fall down

Buy video

Hertfordshire Police blocked off the main road into St Albans.
After checking with the Hertfordshire control room, the road was closed because a tree MIGHT fall down.

At first thought it seems that a sensible thing to do, until you look at it in a bit more detail. The police car only blocked traffic going in the northbound direction. Cars were still allowed to drive south bound. Trees are tall things so if it fell, surely there is a risk of the tree crossing both sides of the carriageway.

School children, dog walkers and mums with babies in Pram's were still allowed to walk on either footpath.

No "Trees of Concern" were cordoned off to highlight the potential danger.

No policeman was even in the car in case the tree did fall down.

The traffic chaos in the area was horrendous. Buses and coaches were diverted off down small residential roads possibly increasing the risk of accidents where people were not expecting to see such traffic.

Certain drivers decided to ignore the Police car and signs and drove past to find a clear empty road.

No tree has fallen down yet.
