The Global Post described it as the second worst zoo in the world. Animals of every kind – domestic and wild – were kept in small dirty cages, without proper food or medicine. Cages were not safe and children used to touch and disturb the animals and throw food, cigarettes and garbage into the cages. After pressure from animal rights organizations and animal activists, the owner of the Erbil zoo decided to build a new zoo on 2500 meters of land. On 18th January, Dr Sulaiman Tameer of the Kurdistan Organization of Animal Rights Protection (KOARP), OIPA league members, together with Women's International Network Erbil, animal lovers and activists, VIP and animal right organizations closed the zoo and transported the animals to the new location. They cleaned all cages of the new zoo, divided wild and domestic animals, gave food, water and medicine to animals and planted trees. by the way Erbil got a Capital of tourism it needs an international zoo with all the service and until now we have no national park for tourists to visit.
