Man breaks canal-vaulting world record

A remarkable video has emerged from the Netherlands of a man setting a new world record for canal-vaulting.

The footage, captured in Woerden on August 12, shows Jaco de Groot performing an spectacular leap of 22.12 metres.

The previous record was 21.64 metres, set by Bart Helmholt.

Canal vaulting is known as fierljeppen in the Netherlands and originated as a means of quickly crossing the country's many waterways.

Over time it turned into a competition with the first official match in 1771.
