Cruise ships in Venice, Italy

Two large cruise ships, Royal Caribbean's Rhapsody of the Seas and MSC Sinfonia (Symphony) depart Venice, Italy, at sunset on 30 September 2017.

Many Venetians are opposed to the large cruise ships docking in the World Heritage city, saying they bring too many tourists and cause environmental damage to the lagoon.

During peak-season, cruise ships can bring up to 30,000 visitors a day creating overcrowding in the floating city which has a resident population of just 55,000.

The large ships dwarf the historic city's gondolas and landmarks, as can be seen here with the two ships leaving through the Giudecca canal.
