We were out for the day driving up the Kohala coast with Humpback whales in mind hoping to catch a glimpse or two of breaching whales if we could. We decided to take our drone just in case.
When we arrived at this particular beach access we were surprised to see what looked like a canoe on the surface. When we looked through our binoculars we were amazed to see a whale fluke floating above the surface of the water. Most people present thought the whale might be dead as it had been like that for some time. We decided to fly the drone out overhead to see what was happening and to our amazement we were able to see a calf swimming around it’s mother. Again we thought maybe the mother had died but after a while the mother surfaced and could be seen interacting with the calf. In the end we thought maybe the mother was nursing the calf and that was why she was hanging upside down.
