Urban leafcutter ants foraging and transporting leaves

Buy video

The farmers of the insect world, leafcutter ants grow their own food in underground fungus farms. Pieces of leaf are carried hundreds of metres in impressive processions, with each ant carrying a piece up to 50 times its own body weight. These ants are farmers - they don't eat the leaves, they cultivate the fungus which sustains them! This video - starring a species of leafcutter ant native to Brazil - was filmed in a studio setting. It was designed to capture the foraging behaviour of the worker ants with an urban twist since, next to humans, leafcutter ants form one of the largest and most complex animal societies on Earth.
