State of emergency declared in Wisconsin county after flash floods devastate cities
A state of emergency was declared in Madison on Tuesday, August 21 after more than 11 inches (28 centimeters) of rain fell the day before and overnight.
A man in his 70s died yesterday when his car stalled in flood waters and was swept away. The vehicle came to rest nose down and quickly filled with water.
According to the weather service, the downpour broke a Wisconsin record for most rainfall in a 24-hour period, forcing evacuations and downing power across cities.
This video, shared to Facebook by Scot Petri, shows a creek in Middletown overflowing and pouring into Lake Mendota.
The worst of the weather seemed to have passed by midday Tuesday, with the forecast calling for dry conditions Tuesday night and sunshine on Wednesday and Thursday.
