Astonishing footage shows Portuguese Big Wave surfer, João Guedes paddling into a big wave during last Tuesday's session in Praia do Norte, Nazaré, during what was the first solid swell of the season and wiping out.

The video shows Guedes paddling into a somewhat bumpy wave, and he wipes out taking a direct hit by the white wash wall. The video shows part of the rescue that followed with Guedes being pushed back by the second wave, luckily not bigger than the first one.

Guedes suffered minor injuries due to his surfboard hitting his head during the wipeout, but was back outside shortly after.

João Guedes 32 years old, is one of Portugal’s most experienced Big Wave Surfers, he is currently a wildcard for the WSL’s Nazaré Challenge, a contest part of the Big Wave Tour that will take place in Praia do Norte in the next few months during the winter season.

Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, has become famous worldwide for huge waves in 2011, when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a world-record for the largest wave ever surfed at 78-foot at the time, in 2017 that record was broken by Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa, setting the bar at 80-foot.
