The Ottawa river made a car park look like a beach, when floodwater submerged it entirely, turning it into an impromptu beach with fragments of nearby trees lining the edges.

According to the filmer, who shot the footage last Sunday (April 28), the flooding was caused by: "extreme weather events [such as] record-high snowfall in late winter and rain fall in spring."

Extreme weather events (record-high snowfall in late winter and rain fall in spring) cause the Ottawa river levels rise and flood the neighbouring regions. Many residents of the Ottawa/Gatineau area are affected, some roads and bridges are closed and the provincial and federal governments advise their employees to work from home in order to reduce the traffic on the remaining roads. Extreme weather events become more frequent in Ottawa/Gatineau. A similar flood happened in the same area in 2017, in May 2018 there was a windstorm that left nearly 20,000 in the Outaouais region without power and in September 2018 there was a tornado that damaged 200 buildings in Gatineau and 50 homes in Ottawa. The frequency and intensity of these extreme weather events are growing. Climate change is real and we have to act now to mitigate its effects.
