Self-taught engineer turns old household items into handmade miniature vehicles for kids
Self-designed, handmade, and built from scratch, Arunkumar Purushothaman's miniature vehicles bring his children the joy that no toy can bring.
The self-taught designer and engineer brings together unused items from all over the house to create these fully-functional vehicles that are battery-operated. Rubber slippers, used PVC, old boxes, and even parts of a gas stove turn into useful items in Purushothaman's hands.
Purushothaman still remembers his childhood days where he used to cry and ask his parents for a tricycle. But his parents couldn't afford to give their son one because of their poor financial background. However, when his mother got hold of a discarded tricycle, she brought it home. And after his father created wooden wheels to go with it, young Purushothaman was delighted to ride a tricycle of his own.
Now that he is a father himself, he wants to make sure that his children don't miss out on the fun of riding their own little vehicle. His miniature vehicles fill their days with glee as they ride around their tiny autorickshaw with their favorite film songs playing along.
The full-time nurse from Idukki has recycled and re-purposed various items to make a fully-functional jeep, auto-rickshaw, and a tricycle for his kids.
Years before he started making vehicles for his little ones, he made his first project in the 10th grade—a hydraulic earth-mover—which earned him a state-level award.
After he became a father, his children became the main inspiration for his next projects. And with his wife's constant support, he hopes to make projects that not only benefit his family but the community as well.
For his next project, he is creating a specially designed jeep for a cancer patient who is being treated at the Regional Cancer Center (RCC) in Trivandrum, Kerala.
His main desire is to use his skill and ambition to create affordable, multi-functional electric chairs that can be used by the differently-abled. With the hope of receiving funds and donations, Purushothaman plans to produce budget-friendly, hybrid vehicles for amputees and the physically challenged.
