Improvised compass
This is a very old hack and has saved thousands of human lives over the centuries. Most experienced people who venture into the wilderness carry a compass, but if you find yourself lost and without a compass, make a puddle of water or get some water in a container that you might be carrying, and let the water become still. Now, slowly lay a leaf on the water and carefully place a sewing needle or a straightened metal wire (rub it on your clothes to magnetize it) over it. The magnetic field of the Earth will slowly align the needle along the north-south line.
